There is a story behind this festival. It is celebrated in the memory of the death of Holika. Once upon time there was a demon named was Hiranyakashyap. He was very wicked. He had forbidden his subjects to worship God. His son,prahlad,refuse to obey him. So he punished Prahlad in several ways. At last he ordered his sister,Holika, to burn Prahlad. She had the blessing of a god that she could not be burn up by fire. When she took Prahlad into the burnings fire,she was burt to ashes. Prahlad was not burt at all. To commemorate this the Hindus observe Holi.

होली हिंदुओं का सबसे खुशहाल त्योहार है। यह पूरे भारत में मनाया जाता है। इसे फाल्गुन के मन्त्र में मनाया जाता है। यह वसंत का महत्वपूर्ण त्योहार है।
इस त्योहार के पीछे एक कहानी है। यह होलिका की मृत्यु की याद में मनाया जाता है। एक बार की बात है कि हिरण्यकश्यप नाम का एक दानव था। वह बहुत दुष्ट था। उसने अपनी प्रजा को भगवान की पूजा करने से मना किया था। उसका बेटा, प्रह्लाद, उसकी बात मानने से इनकार कर देता है। इसलिए उसने प्रहलाद को कई तरह से दंडित किया। अंत में उन्होंने अपनी बहन होलिका को प्रह्लाद को जलाने का आदेश दिया। उसे एक भगवान का आशीर्वाद था कि वह आग से जल नहीं सकता था। जब वह प्रहलाद को जलती आग में ले गई, तो वह जल कर राख हो गया। प्रह्लाद बिलकुल नहीं था। इसे मनाने के लिए हिंदू होली मनाते हैं।
होली खुशी का त्योहार है। इस दिन सभी लोग हंसमुख मूड में होते हैं। उन्हें नए कपड़ों पर लगाया जाता है जो एक दूसरे पर रंगीन पानी छिड़कते हैं
वे ढोल पीटते हैं और गाने गाते हैं। मीरा-मेकिंग और मस्ती उनकी ऊंचाई तक पहुंचती है। बच्चों ने राहगीरों पर कीचड़ और रंगीन पानी फेंका। शाम को लोग एक दूसरे को गले लगाते हैं।

इस मौके पर कुछ लोग नशे में धुत हो जाते हैं। कई लोग अश्लील गाने गाते हैं और महिलाओं के साथ दुर्व्यवहार करते हैं।
